Case Study:
Aero Engine Drive Shaft Challenge
Working in close collaboration with the client
Very tight tolerances
Utilising NTG’s specialist grinding facility
Problem
Length and tolerance of the component was challenging
A 1.6m long, hollow shaft that requires tight tolerance for a new aero engine. Being utilised as part of an efficiency programme by the client. NTG has partnered with a leading university within the high-value manufacturing (HVM) catapult network that is researching cutting-edge manufacturing and new designs.
Solution
Ongoing collaboration
NTG’s engineering team are working in close collaboration with the researchers and designers to help them find a manufacturing method that will be fit for purpose in the long term. Utilising NTG’s specialist surface and cylindrical grinding facilities will allow the component to go from early-stage prototype to early production trials.
Result
Successfully gone through initial, early prototype stages. Now into the second design stage leading to pre-production manufacturing. Currently optimising with the client.
